• Insulate attics, walls, basements, and exposed exterior pipes to avoid freezing.
• Keep interior building temperatures from dropping below freezing temperatures. 
• Seal all doors, windows, wall cracks and penetrations including domestic and fire protection lines, electrical conduit, other utility service lines, etc. 
• Ventilate the attic well to keep it cold to reduce the amount of melting and refreezing on the roof. 
• Free all drains, scuppers, gutters, and downspouts of debris and vegetation to prevent restriction of proper water flow. 
• Avoid ice and snow damage to the roof or interior of the property by removing snow build-up.
• Disconnect exterior supply pipes like garden hoses and cover or close open air vents. 
• Disconnect electrical appliances to avoid damage from power surges during power failures, which often occur after the power is restored.
